Welcome to Michigan Fishing

I know blogs are probably now considered dinosaurs with every thing on Facebook now, but I am old school and prefer to keep a diary using a blog.  This will be a place for me to write about my fishing adventures. It has been a long time since I last went fishing (probably close to 10 years when I lived in Arizona), but as I am now living in Michigan, and getting older, I am looking for some more outdoor activities, so I thought why not fishing. In the next 5-7 years the plan is for my wife and I t relocate once more in Northern Michigan (lower Northern Michigan) and once there, it will be nothing but outdoor activities.  While spending last week up there visiting, and checking on our lots, we also went to Jay's Sporting Goods in Gaylord, MI (not to far from our property) and I decided to get a start on my new fishing hobby. I walked out of Jay's with a new pole, tackle bag, bait and some tools and now I am excited to start going fishing.  Unfortunately we do not own a boat (yet

Fishing Report: 11/08/2020 Little Paw Paw Lake (Coloma, MI)

What a beautiful Fall day we had here today in Michigan, the temperature was 60 degrees and the sun would come and go.  I know I will not have too many more days left to fish this year, if any more, so I knew I had to get out today. I decided to try another new spot to me and really close to home (3 miles away), Little Paw Paw Lake in Coloma, MI.  This is another lake and that is suppose to have a nice variety of species. I tried for the first two hours to catch any Largemouth or Smallmouth Bass with a standard Texas rig and a Shad lure but had no success with either. I then decided to change gears and try for some Crappie fishing for the next hour and just relax and enjoy the weather.  Well the fish were not biting today and I did not catch anything.  I am ok with that, I got to enjoy the outdoors.

Fishing Report: 10/04/2020 Rush Lake (Hartford, MI)

The rain was on and off today with some sunny patches, so the wife and I took a ride out to visit another new look called Rush Lake in Hartford, MI.  Rush Lake is a nice quiet lake that I am told has a variety of species including Largemouth Bass, so that is what I was planning on. My wife does not fish (yet) but she accompanied me with a chair and her iPad just to enjoy the Fall weather for a few hours. We were out there for about 2 hours (boy time does go by pretty quick when your fishing) and just like yesterday, nothing was caught.  I think the cooler weather this weekend pushed most of the fish back into the center, and when your fishing from shore, it is pretty tough. This is one lake I will be back to in the future, especially once I get a little boat.

Fishing Report: 10/03/2020 Mill Pond (Dowagiac, MI)

I decided to head out today to fish instead of tomorrow to try and be ahead of the rain coming through.  Instead of going back out to Paw Paw Lake in Coloma, I decided to drive southeast about 25 miles to the town of Dowagiac and Mill Pond. Mill Pond is known for the location where James Heddon created one of the original fishing lures. I had no luck at all today, it was quiet and peaceful, but nothing was biting.  I was going back and forth between a Texas rig with a "The Original Trick Worm: Green Pumpkin" by Zoom and a crankbait from Cabela, a "Shallow Suspending rad Shad". If the rain clears up in the afternoon tomorrow, I may try another new spot closer to home.

Headed back out to Paw Paw Lake this morning to try and get me another Bass or two, but no such luck today.  The Largemouth Bass were not biting from the pier location. I even tried out my new Bass Pro Shops Power Plus Graphite Casting Rod  with the Zebco Omega Z03 Pro reel and a Cabela's Shallow Suspending rad Shad and no such luck. That is ok, it is still nice to just be able to go fishing and enjoy the outdoors.

This morning I decided to drive a bit further to a fishing pier out on Paw Paw Lake, it is not too much farther than the river. I read that there is a nice assortment of species here and wanted to give a try at some largemouth bass fishing. I setup my rod with a Texas Rig with a new worm I purchased yesterday and a 1/4 oz bullet weight. Well about 90 minutes into fishing, I caught my first Largemouth Bass.  I was so excited and nervous that I did not want to kill the fish, so I did not weight this one, but from the looks of it, it was probably just over 1 lb.

Shopping: 09/19/2020 Bass Pro Shops (Portage, IN)

Today was a trip to the closest Bass Pro Shops I have, which is in Portage, IN. Originally we went out for a few hours so we could bug spray the house, but it was still a nice ride out. I did not have much on my shopping list, but once you go up and down the aisle, the items keeping adding up. I picked up few more bullet weights, hooks, worms and some hard baits for bass. $74 dollars later and I was ready to leave (well not really, the wife and son wanted to leave as I still had a second floor I had not seen yet), maybe next time I’ll go by myself.

Went out for the first time in almost a decade just a few blocks from the house down to Paw Paw River. I hear this location is good for panfish (Bluegill and Crappies) so I set up my pole for some Crappie fishing. Unfortunately after 2 hours, nothing was caught. Till next time.
